CBT is goal-oriented and structured, and helps us to identify the connection between our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physical reactions. CBT aims to help us identify and challenge our unhelpful thoughts, and find new ways to understand and manage our emotions and behaviors.

ERP is formally recognized as evidence based treatment for OCD and anxiety disorders such as phobias, social anxiety, panic, etc. ERP is a form of CBT that involves providing education about the diagnosis, and then identifying and confronting the fears or the discomfort associated with fears. In ERP we work together to come in contact with fears or obsessional thoughts (exposures), and resist performing the safety behavior or compulsions (response prevention). Much of my ERP work is ACT informed.

ACT is used to help increase our psychological flexibility through: acceptance, cognitive defusion, being present, self as context, values, and committed action. Much of my clinical work, including ERP, is ACT informed, meaning that instead of focusing on reducing symptoms of anxiety or discomfort, we focus on engaging in value-guided activities even if anxiety and discomfort are present. We want to work together to identify when our thoughts are helpful vs. unhelpful, and note that thoughts aren’t facts.
